what good would fingers be if it weren’t for diamond rings

what’s love?

it’s hard to dig back into my memories and remember the weightlessness of loving someone. it isn’t about finding a better half, it’s about finding someone that complements your entirety. it’s finding common ground, accepting challenge. it’s seeing someone with a new, open heart.

my brother asked me to write a piece for he and josee’s wedding ceremony. a part of me felt hopeless and i’ve waited til 4 days before their big day to finally sit down and actually write this thing. it was so hard to piece something together for them because they already do it so seamlessly. i never had to elaborate on their love because you take one look at the way they act around one another and you just get it. i look at the way cory and josee look at each other and everything in the world makes sense again. i want a love that makes them glow the way they do.

i decided to take pieces of some of my favourite quotes, mash them into one speech, add some personal touches here and there, and see what i came up with. granted one of the quotes is a line from the notebook, but dammit that noah was a brilliant lover and it’s probably one of my favourite lines of all time.

***

it starts with a static.

marriage is a psychological and spiritual journey that begins in the ecstasy of attraction, zigzags through a rocky stretch of discovery, and culminates in the creation of an intimate, joyful, lifelong union. we’re here today because a little red-headed girl has found her blue-eyed prince and that static has turned to electricity. it begins with moments of comfortable silence, of butterflies in the pit of your stomach, of little gasps of joy. it blossoms into a common understanding, a genuine respect, and a bond so pure.

i once read somewhere that love is both an art and a fortunate accident- that somewhere along the way, the breathlessness and newness transform into roots that grow towards each other underground- and when you look past all the pretty blossom that has fallen from their branches, we’ve found that cory and josee are one tree, and not two.

the best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes you reach for more, that plants a fire in your hearts and brings peace to your minds, and that’s what you’ve given each other. that’s what i hope you give to each other forever.

if any of us know what love is, it’s because of you.

  1. I’m having similar trouble trying to write my maid of honor speech for my sister’s wedding. Trying to block out my own personal feelings on love, and concentrate on the love they have for each other. Hopefully, my personal bias doesn’t get in the way too much.

  2. beautiful! i have to write a speech for my sister in laws wedding soon. may have to borrow(steal) a few lines and build off it lol. but in all seriousness totally beautiful
